Sandton, December 2, 2023 - The Eastern Cape Combo of radio stations emerged as a dominant force at the Telkom Radio Awards held in Sandton on Saturday, with an outstanding total of seven awards.
Umhlobo Wenene FM claimed the spotlight with six well-deserved awards, including a lifetime achievement honor (Hall of Fame) for the esteemed Nomthunzi Vuza, affectionately known as "Mama ka Ma-Asi." After an impressive 33-year tenure, Nomthunzi Vuza retired in April this year. Sisanda "PastorTheDJ" was celebrated for Best Morning Drive Time Show Host for "Brakfesi Eyondlayo Ekuseni (BEE)," a show he has passionately hosted for 14 years.
Other notable winners from Umhlobo Wenene FM include UWFM Drive Enochatha for Best Afternoon Drive Show - PBS, presented by Luks Gidane and Zintle "Babe Zee" Mbusi Ikwayara Eziphambili hosted by Thembela "King Booi", UWFM Top 20 hosted by Thembinkosi "Luckeez Mfowethu" Matyolweni and Umxholo Nomhlobo hosted by Siphiwo Magoda.
Trufm, the Eastern Cape Combo's regional station, secured the Best Breakfast Show - PBS, hosted by Boyz Mpunzi and Sinazo Yolwa, solidifying the combo's position as the big winners of the night.
Loyiso Bala, Business Manager for Eastern Cape Combo, expressed elation as he accepted the awards, emphasizing the dedication of the radio teams. Bala highlighted the success of relatively new shows and acknowledged the exceptional achievement of Umxholo Nomhlobo, a show hosted by last year's Hall of Fame recipient, Siphiwo Magoda, marking 30 years in radio.
Bala congratulated all winners and nominees, underscoring the Eastern Cape Combo's commitment to inform, educate, and entertain in the rich language of IsiXhosa. He credited the station's success to the hard work of the various teams. The Eastern Cape Combo continues to deliver captivating programming that resonates with audiences, making a lasting impact on hearts and minds.
