The SABC and in particular SABC Sport, would like to send condolences to the family, close friends and his supporters during this difficult time.
At the pinnacle of his career, Joost was at the time one of the best scrum-half in the world. His long standing try scoring record of 38 was only surpassed at the 2011 IRB Rugby World Cup by the legendary Bryan Habana. He last played for the Springboks in 2003, by then being South Africa’s record cap holder of 89 caps.
Ms Sully Motsweni, SABC Sport Group Executive stated “Millions of South African fell in love with Joost when they first saw him on our TV screens when we showed the 1995 IRB Rugby World Cup. It was his passion and dedication to fighting for South Africans on the field of play, proudly wearing the Springbok jersey to make sure we become world champions. That made him one of this country’s most loved sport personalities. It was the same dedication and gallant spirit, which he showed in fighting his illness till his passing”.
Joost van der Westhuizen will forever be endeared in the hearts and minds of South Africans, leaving us with unforgettable memories.
