Show(s):

Natalie Malgas is an award-winning journalist and no stranger to radio.

She’s been chasing leads, breaking top stories and delivering scoops for a decade. Natalie started her career at a community radio station and launched into commercial radio, handling business on the prime-time afternoon news desk.

The newest addition to the Big Breakfast packs a mean punch with her quick wit, humorous flare and sharp news sense.

  • What do you love most about radio?

I love the immediacy of the medium, it’s exhilarating that it all plays out in real-time. In a world of social media, where most of what we consume is perfectly primed & rehearsed, radio is authentic. It’s also quite intimate. You’re literally travelling with people on their morning commute, sitting at their desks and moving as they move wherever they listen to us!

  • How long have you been on radio?

I had been doing radio for 7 years before taking the leap to TV news in 2018. I’ve since returned to my first love after a 4 year hiatus.

  • What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I enjoy staying active. If I’m not working out at the gym, I’m riding my bike or hiking with friends. I have the most adorable fur-baby husky, Hunter, who keeps we very busy. It’s important to me to slow the pace in my spare time too, rest and spending quality time with family and good friends is what sustains me when my days get hectic.

  • What knowledge do you love imparting onto your listeners?

I like to offer listeners unique insights and analysis of the news of the day; delve into the story behind the story and reveal lurks behind the headlines. Often, in our busy lives, there’s little time for the context and we’re stuck on only one perspective. I like to share that useful, did-you-know nugget that tickles the brain.

  • What daily motivation do you believe contributes to your success over the airwaves daily?

Be real. Radio’s power lies in the authenticity, as long as you respect the medium and the listener, you can’t go wrong.

  • What has been your favourite moment on Radio?

I’ve really enjoyed working with the team from Community Chest. The ‘Keep Cape Town warm’ campaign is so impactful and heartwarming. It’s really beautiful to see the ripple effect of good gestures and to see so many come out support this worthy initiative.
