Show(s): Sunset Smoothie

He is a Capetonian. ‘Born and Brad’

Bradley still has fond memories of growing up in Belhar, delivering newspapers on his BMX when it was still safe for kids to play hide-and-seek after dark. His school holidays were spent going to ‘bioscope’ in Bonteheuwel and playing tennis in the streets during Wimbledon. While studying at UWC, he was introduced to campus radio and that is when everything changed.

He trained at Film school and spent a few years working in live television before everything changed again – becoming a husband, a dad and pursuing three degrees at two universities to qualify as a Clinical Psychologist. During the week he sits with people in pain and has the incredible privilege of watching them heal as he reminds them of his favourite quote by Baruch Shalem, “There’s nothing wrong with you, that what’s right with you can’t fix”. It is the stuff that’s right with you that fixes what’s wrong. And then on a Sunday night, Brad puts on a set of headphones to have some playtime with people who share a love for really good music

  • What do you love most about radio?

I love radio’s intimacy and immediacy – it’s live, it’s now, it’s in the moment. Listeners get to co-create moments in which to laugh or shed a tear – and most importantly, it connects people. That’s why it has stood the test of time.

  • How long have you been on radio?

I think I currently hold the record (excuse the pun) for being Good Hope FM’s longest serving on-air presenter. This year marks 22 years of unbroken service with Good Hope FM and every time I walk into the studio, it still feels like just yesterday that I got the call. Prior to joining Good Hope FM, I spent 3 years in radio at C-Flat Radio, one of Cape Town’s first community radio stations. Overall, that makes me 25 years old in radio years. Twenty-something is a great feeling.

  • What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I run a busy schedule, so spare time is a rare commodity, but when I do get those ‘free minutes’ you’ll catch me cycling on Sea Point Promenade, trying to keep up with my kids. I’m a news junkie, so in my downtime I watch a lot of local and overseas news networks and when I’m feeling creative, I’ll also paint (walls).

  • What knowledge do you love imparting onto your listeners?

My listeners on a Sunday evening are not up for any ‘heavy’ topics. That being said, I have something meaty in the pipeline, but that’s a state secret for now. At this stage, the extent of the knowledge I impart is a super-accurate weather report by which listeners can confidently plan their week’s wardrobe and hairdo. Deserving a special mention is the occasional ‘Mince Meter’ Reading that provides crucial (again, excuse the pun) information about precipitation levels that are likely to turn hairdos into hair-don’ts.

  • What daily motivation do you believe contributes to your success over the airwaves?

I grew up on Good Hope FM. I’m from here. I’m basically a listener who got to live out his dream of becoming a Good Hope FM DJ – and this is something that drives me. I constantly remind myself that I get to do this. I did not expect 22 rounds, but I’m not complaining 

  • What has been your favourite moment on Radio, any campaign you can share and why did you love it so much, what did you enjoy most about working with said brand.

My favourite moment has to be the day Men’s Health magazine sponsored a make-over live on air, which included the chopping off of my ponytail after years of growing my hair. I particularly enjoyed the pampering and if they ever did that again, I’d like them to re-attach it so that I can use it as a fringe to see whether I can start a new look that could
