On 13 February 2024, Thobela FM in collaboration with Ditsong: National Museum of Military History will be celebrating World Radio Day under the theme ‘Radio: A century informing, entertaining and educating’. Over 500 learners and families will flock the exhibition halls to view displays of radio collections and engage in fun activities. Radio enthusiasts can have a closer look at the world of broadcasting while Thobela FM broadcasts live from the Museum.

The invention of radio communication was preceded by the discovery and experimental investigation of radio waves. These developments allowed the Italian inventor and electrical engineer, Guglielmo Marconi, to build a complete functional model of a radio in 1895. Since then, radio has been a medium of communication providing a platform for information transfer, education, entertainment, and expression. In November 2011, at the 36th session of UNESCO’s General Conference, member states of UNESCO endorsed the proclamation of World Radio Day to be celebrated annually on February 13.

Ditsong: National Museum of Military History preserves military heritage and is a memorial for all South Africans who have died in, or because of military actions. The Museum prides itself with a primitive collection of radios from WW1, WW2, and Mk Liberation Army communication. The Museum has approximately 300 artefacts in the radio collection, ranging from wireless sets, headsets, a tuner, speaking tube, radios, microphones, a morse key, etc. From its formation, radio did not have regulations and legal licences to operate until WW1, when formations of the then British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and other American broadcasters were legalised. Radio has always been the most cost effective and efficient mode of communication around the world.

Thobela FM is a radio station with a contemporary format that broadcasts content exclusively in the Northern Sotho language. It is primarily a talk radio offering a line – up comprised of talk shows discussing current affairs, news reports, and several entertainment shows. Thobela FM broadcasts nationwide from Polokwane using frequencies between 87.6 MHZ and 92.1 MHZ FM and it can also be found on the SABC Plus App. Listeners all over the world can listen live to its broadcasts, so make sure not to miss out on the live broadcast on the 13th of February 2024 (World Radio Day).
