Over the weekend, there was outrage surrounding labour equity at one the country's biggest pharmaceutical retailers: Dischem.  In a leaked letter, CEO Ivan Saltzmann outlined the company's intent to have a moratorium on employment and promotion of staff at management level.  The company sought to address transformation as their employment equity profile had fallen short in a review dating back in September 2022. The company is also undergoing this moratorium to avoid being fined for noncompliance by the Department of Labour and Johannesburg Stock Exchange. The company has stood by its letter and intends to move ahead despite court challenges being brought against them by the trade union, Solidarity.
