The SAHHA2020 are back again

Date: Nov 17, 2020

After a successful run the previous year, the 9th Annual South African Hip Hop Awards (#SAHHA2020) returns under a new theme “The New World Order.”

“The theme idea comes from the hard lockdown experience which resulted in all of us being confined to our homes, glued to our tv sets, computers and our phones via twitter, instagram, facebook and tik tok. We were told we had to get used to and adapt to ‘the new normal’ and thus the concept theme, “NEW WORLD ORDER.” – Osmic Menoe, S.A Hip Hop Awards Director.

The show will boast a number of appearances, live performances and tributes by today’s leading musicians within the Hip Hop culture and will be aired on SABC 1 on the 12th of December 2020.

“As a big supporter of local hip hop culture, SABC 1 is excited with the continued historic partnership with the South African Hip Hop Awards as it provides millions of our youthful audience access to the leading hip hop event of the year, as well as bringing the channels’ current propositioning – Nomanini We Move – to life. As a youth brand and a leading television platform in the Southern Hemisphere, it is part of the channel’s strategy to move at the speed of popular culture and to preserve our dominance through relevance, flexibility and agility in the market by providing premium quality content such as SAHHA to our viewers.” – Pumzile Zonke, SABC 1 Channel Head.

The biggest night in South African Hip Hop will bring a new twist this year as the production team alongside the show sponsors namely SABC 1, Arts Alive, City Of Jo'burg, Stylin' Dredz, Hennessy and the newly formed South African Hip Hop Museum has been working closely with our government officials and after much consideration, due to the COVID-19 pandemic have decided to do the show virtually because health and safety of artists, fans, industry, staff, and partners is of the utmost importance.

Khomotso Ledwaba, brand manager of Hennessy SA, says “Hennessy has long been synonymous with hip hop. Ever since first being uttered on a verse, Hennessy has featured in over 2500 songs in one way or another, and has made an indelible mark on the culture. To date, it’s the most mentioned brand not just in hip hop but in the broader music industry as a whole.  It remains absolutely interwoven with hip hop culture.

Over the years, globally we’ve collaborated with the likes of Rakim, Nas and some of the world’s best-known street artists like KAWS, Vhils, and Shepard Fairey, Faith XLVII. We continue to do so locally, partnering with amazing photographer Jonathan Mannion to shoot local hip hop artists and launching the Hennessy Wall of Fame at the SAHHM to honor the game changers of the culture. We are proud to partner with The South African Hip Hop awards for another year of celebrating amazing talents”.

The South African Hip Hop Awards (SAHHAs) is the year's biggest celebration of Hip Hop on the African continent and this year is no different as it will showcase those who stood above the rest with their artistic innovation and further defined their careers through what has been the toughest year for artists all across the globe.
