Smith, a standout performer in coach Raymond Mdaka’s squad, was instrumental in the team’s 1–0 semi-final win over Nigeria on Thursday evening in Egypt. The Stellenbosch FC centre-back also picked up his second Man of the Match award of the tournament.
“It means a lot for us,” said Smith. “We’ve been through a lot, we had training camps, tough preparations and this means so much to us. To also be playing in the World Cup and to achieve what we have achieved really means a lot to the boys.”
Amajita’s remarkable run has not only reignited national pride but also secured them a place at the upcoming U20 FIFA World Cup.
