SA’s Amajita make history as Tylon Smith reflects on AFCON Final Berth

Date: May 16, 2025

Amajita defender Tylon Smith has reflected on South Africa's (SA) historic run at the U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where the national junior team reached the final for the first time in 28 years.

Smith, a standout performer in coach Raymond Mdaka’s squad, was instrumental in the team’s 1–0 semi-final win over Nigeria on Thursday evening in Egypt. The Stellenbosch FC centre-back also picked up his second Man of the Match award of the tournament.

“It means a lot for us,” said Smith. “We’ve been through a lot, we had training camps, tough preparations and this means so much to us. To also be playing in the World Cup and to achieve what we have achieved really means a lot to the boys.”

Amajita’s remarkable run has not only reignited national pride but also secured them a place at the upcoming U20 FIFA World Cup.
