Eight migrants drown off Tunisian coast as migration crisis deepens

Date: Apr 29, 2025

Tunisia’s coast guard has recovered the bodies of eight African migrants after their boat sank while they attempted to reach Europe.

Authorities confirmed that 29 others were rescued from the vessel, which went down off the coast near the city of Abwabed, close to Sfax.

This part of the Tunisian coastline has become a frequent departure point for migrants, both from Tunisia and other parts of Africa, hoping to make the dangerous journey across the Mediterranean.

Tunisia is currently facing a surge in migration, with more people risking the crossing in search of better opportunities. The country has recently overtaken Libya as the main departure hub for migrants heading towards Europe, raising concerns about the capacity of local authorities to respond to the growing number of crossings.

Search and rescue efforts continue as officials warn of worsening conditions for migrants along the country’s coastline.
