SA Police arrest Nigerian Pastor Timothy Omotoso after acquittal

Date: May 10, 2025

Controversial Nigerian preacher Timothy Omotoso has been arrested in South Africa’s (SA) Eastern Cape province, less than a month after being acquitted of a string of serious criminal charges.

Omotoso, who leads the Jesus Dominion International church, was taken into custody this week amid ongoing legal proceedings. His arrest follows a ruling by the Gqeberha High Court in April, which found him and his co-accused, Lusanda Sulani and Zukiswa Sitho not guilty on 32 charges, including rape, human trafficking and sexual assault.

Delivering the judgement, Judge Irma Schoeman stated that the prosecution had failed to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt. The high-profile trial, which spanned several years, drew intense public scrutiny and divided opinion across both South Africa and Nigeria.

Although cleared of all charges, Omotoso is now facing extradition to Nigeria. The court instructed authorities to begin the process shortly after his acquittal. It remains unclear what new legal matters await him in his home country, but officials say further details will be provided in an upcoming statement.

The latest developments mark a dramatic turn in a case that has stirred debate around justice, power, and faith-based leadership on the continent.
