The group, aged between 21 and 41, was apprehended during the Vala Umgodi operations in Witrandjie village, close to Sun City, and Majakaneng village near Brits. These operations, focused on curbing illegal mining, led to the confiscation of several tools used in the illicit activity, including water pumps, jackhammers, and electric extension cords.
The accused will appear in court on different dates before 24 June. According to Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, a police Spokesperson in the province, the arrests form part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address illegal mining, which continues to have a serious impact on local communities and the environment.
In a related development, 21 individuals also appeared in the Brits and Mogwase courts on Thursday, April 24, facing charges under the Immigration Act. Three of them were found guilty in the Brits court and were sentenced to six months in prison, with the sentence suspended in favour of a R2000 ($104) fine. The court also ruled that they be deported to their home countries, Mozambique and Malawi.
Brigadier Mokgwabone pointed out that these operations are part of a broader strategy to tackle illegal mining, which has posed a growing problem for the region’s safety and sustainability.
“The police will continue to carry out operations to prevent illegal mining and related offences, which are harmful to both the environment and the economy,” Mokgwabone stated.
