SA Human Rights Commission settles complaint against former Member of Parliament, Renaldo Gouws

Date: May 16, 2025

The South African (SA) Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has confirmed that it has settled a complaint against former Member of Parliament, Renaldo Gouws, in relation to a video he had published in 2010

The video, which contained racially offensive, and harmful language, directed specifically at black South Africans, resurfaced last year, leading to the Democratic Alliance member being fired from his position in the country’s Parliament.

Dr Eileen Carter is the SAHRC’s provincial manager in the Eastern Cape province, and says Gouws has committed to an extensive and unconditional apology.

“He then also provided that apology on all his platforms. But coupled with that, we're also going to engage Mr Gouws, from here on- on awareness sessions, and workshops, two- of them within the next three months- where we're going to also show him what the work of the commission entails- and perhaps also to illustrate to him the human rights concerns of the provinces, and what daily life for instance in an environment with bucket toilets looks like. So that Mr Gouws, can get a better understanding of human rights realisation within the province, as well as the country,” Carter said.
