Plans published in the Daily Nation show a striking white structure with stained glass windows and Christian symbols, designed to accommodate up to 8 000 worshippers. The project is estimated to cost over $9 million and has stirred heated debate across the country.
Many Kenyans have criticised the move as tone-deaf, accusing Ruto of focusing on personal religious ambitions while the majority of citizens struggle with soaring living costs and unemployment. Critics also argue that such a development raises concerns under Kenya’s secular constitution.
Responding to the criticism, Ruto defended the project, saying he is personally funding the construction and has no intention of backing down. A committed evangelical Christian and former businessman, Ruto has often made religion a visible part of his Presidency.
The announcement comes as the government faces mounting pressure from young Kenyans protesting against tax hikes, economic inequality, and police violence. Even some within the political establishment have questioned the timing and optics of the church project.
