SA President, US Countertpart to meet amid strained relations

Date: Apr 24, 2025

South African (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa and United States (US) President Donald Trump have agreed to hold a meeting soon to discuss relations between their two countries.

This follows heightened tensions after Trump accused the SA government of allowing attacks against Afrikaner farming communities.

Ramaphosa confirmed that the two leaders had a telephonic conversation this morning, with a major focus on the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict and global peace efforts. He was speaking from the Union Buildings in Pretoria, Gauteng province during a working visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“I had an opportunity to speak to  Trump yesterday to discuss the peace process in Ukraine,” Ramaphosa said. “We both agreed that the war should be brought to an end as soon as possible to prevent further death and destruction.”

He added, “Trump and I also agreed to meet soon to address this and relations between SA and the US. We both spoke about the need to foster good relations between our two countries.”
