Faustin Nsabumukunzi is accused of hiding his involvement in the violence when he applied for asylum in the US. Investigators claim he later used false information to secure permanent residency and eventually applied for American citizenship.
US federal prosecutors allege that Nsabumukunzi deliberately misled immigration officials about his past in order to gain entry into the country and build a new life.
The charges levelled against him include immigration fraud and perjury. If found guilty, he could be sentenced to as many as 30 years behind bars.
The arrest forms part of a broader effort by international law enforcement to track down and prosecute individuals suspected of war crimes and crimes against humanity, even decades after the events in question.
Officials have not disclosed whether the Rwandan government has submitted a request for his extradition. The case is expected to draw significant attention from human rights observers and legal experts alike.
