Date: Jul 20, 2025

The African Union (AU) has welcomed a new peace agreement between the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Alliance Fleuve DRC/M23.

It described the deal as a crucial step towards ending years of conflict in eastern DRC and improving stability across the Great Lakes region.

The agreement, signed in Doha, Qatar, has been hailed as a turning point by the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, who said it represents fresh hope for millions affected by insecurity in the DRC.

Youssouf also acknowledged the involvement of international and regional actors in helping secure the agreement. He commended the diplomatic efforts of the United States and Qatar and expressed appreciation for the continued engagement of the East African Community and the Southern African Development Community.

Special mention was made of the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, for his personal commitment to supporting peace initiatives across Africa.

The AU also highlighted the efforts of Angola’s President João Lourenço, who serves as the African Union’s Champion for Peace and Reconciliation, and Togo’s President Faure Gnassingbé, who was appointed by the AU as mediator in the talks.

Youssouf further praised the leadership of both the DRC and Rwanda, noting their willingness to embrace dialogue and compromise to move the region towards lasting peace.

The AU reiterated its commitment to supporting the full implementation of the agreement and said it would continue working with all stakeholders to promote long-term peace and development in the DRC and the broader Great Lakes area.
