Among others, Mkhwanazi told journalists that Police Minister Senzo Mchunu had associations with dubious characters and that high ranking police officers were corrupt. He had also opened a criminal case against Mchunu, for allegedly derailing investigations into political killings.
Ramaphosa addressed the media in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, following the wrapping up of the 17th BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, SA, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates) Leaders' Summit,
“ What the police commissioner of KZN Mkhwanazi said I was not aware of it that it was coming and obviously it's a matter that I will be dealing with when I get home. I will need to look at it more closely and have a thorough going discussion with a number of people and then they'll be a clear way forward. It is a serious matter it has to do with the security of our people it has to do with our adherence to the rule of law and those who have done wrong should be dealt with thoroughly. So this matter should be addressed. “
