The United States of America, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United Arab Emirates are among the countries that have introduced stricter visa restrictions as part of their immigration crackdown.
Channel Africa’s correspondent in Nigeria, Jonathan James Lyamgohn, reports that the dexterity with which Nigeria is able to handle the situation will determine whether it escalates or not. However, the general belief is that, given the US interest in Nigeria and the presence of Nigerians in the American diaspora, significant behind-the-scenes engagement is already underway, with more expected in the coming weeks.
This is not the first time Nigeria has faced such challenges. It is generally believed that the situation will be ameliorated. The Nigerian government says it is already sharing the necessary data with the US and is open to further cooperation if required.
