According to authorities, Lungu passed away following cardiac complications related to a surgical procedure he underwent at a hospital in South Africa.
Mark Simuuwe, a Spokesperson for the ruling United Party for National Development, confirmed that the State will take full responsibility for the funeral arrangements. He emphasised that all proceedings will be carried out in line with established national protocols.
In an interview with the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation, Simuuwe called for national unity as the country mourns the former head of state. He also reminded the public to be respectful in their social media discussions, citing the provisions of the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act.
“The state funeral will be a fitting tribute to Lungu’s years of service and leadership,” Simuuwe said.
Lungu served as Zambia’s sixth president from 2015 until 2021, during a period marked by both political and economic challenges. He is remembered for his role in steering the country through a complex phase of its democratic journey.
