Amnesty International condemns deadly crackdown on June protests in Togo

Date: Jul 5, 2025

Amnesty International has strongly condemned the violent repression of protests that took place in Togo on June 26-28 June, which resulted in seven fatalities, dozens of injuries, and the arrest of more than 60 people.

The global human rights organisation has called for an urgent, independent, and transparent investigation into the events, urging Togolese authorities to ensure accountability.

In addition, Amnesty International criticised the excessive and unnecessary use of force against peaceful demonstrators, demanding that the government put an immediate stop to such practices.

Fabien Offner, a researcher at Amnesty International’s regional office for West and Central Africa, spoke on the situation, highlighting the urgent need for respect of human rights and justice in Togo.

The protests were reportedly sparked by widespread grievances, reflecting growing tensions in the country’s political landscape. The international community has expressed concern over the escalating violence and urged dialogue to resolve underlying issues peacefully.
