They are contesting various elective positions in the forthcoming general elections, scheduled to take place later this year.
This significant development underscores an encouraging trend towards greater political inclusion and empowerment of persons with disabilities in Malawi. The MCDA notes that such increased participation is the result of sustained advocacy efforts aimed at removing barriers that have historically hindered access to political offices for this community.
Richard Mwafulirwa, reporting from Lilongwe, says, “The involvement of persons with disabilities in this election cycle is higher than ever before, signalling a positive shift towards more inclusive governance. However, challenges remain, including accessibility issues at polling stations and societal attitudes that still marginalise disabled candidates.”
The MCDA is urging electoral authorities and political parties to ensure that the electoral environment is accessible and accommodating to all candidates, including those with disabilities. They also call on voters to support inclusive representation, which they argue is vital for the development of policies that address the needs of all Malawians.
Activists highlight that political participation is a key avenue for persons with disabilities to influence legislation and policies affecting their rights and livelihoods.
