Lieutenant General Christian Tshiwewe and several other military officers were arrested on Wednesday night in the capital Kinshasa.
DRC government official who declined to be quoted says Tshiwewe has been detained at the Ndolo military prison in Kinshasa.
He was arrested on suspicion of plotting a coup with other senior army officers.
According to the official, military intelligence officers found incriminating evidence against them during investigations.
Authorities haven't issued an official communication yet.
Tshiwewe joined the army in the late 1990's during the tenure of former Congolese President Laurent Desire Kabila.
He rose through the ranks and was appointed the Army Chief of Staff in 2022 by President Felix Tshisekedi.
