The department raised concerns about the country’s low organ donation rates, attributing the problem to cultural and religious misconceptions. Spokesperson Forster Mohale said many South Africans remain reluctant to donate due to lingering stereotypes and a lack of information.
“There are more than 2 500 people on the active waiting list for organ and tissue transplants across the country,” Mohale explained. “We believe that through this campaign, working with partner organisations like the Organ Donor Foundation, we can address the myths and change public attitudes.”
Mohale added that individuals can choose to donate organs while still alive or indicate their intention to donate after death, helping ease the burden on the country’s overstretched transplant system.
