Ukrainian President uses SA visit to continue call for unconditional ceasefire

South African (SA) President, Cyril Ramaphosa says the country is deeply concerned about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine

Ramaphosa referred to the loss of civilian lives, damage to critical infrastructure and deteriorating humanitarian situation. Ramaphosa hosted Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky for a working visit at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

Zelenskyy has made a historic visit to the country, as it continues to Chair the G20, an influential global forum.

Ramaphosa has reaffirmed that the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine must end. In 2023, he led the African Leaders' Peace Mission to both countries, calling for the cessation of hostilities. Zelenskyy has commended all who want to see peace in his country

Pretoria is one of the capitals that can still access to countries for talks as the war continues.
Zelenskyy has also pleaded with SA to engage with Moscow to bring back their children

The United States has also been involved in talks to end the conflict. One of the major issues is around the preconditions after Russia annexed some Ukrainian territories including Crimea. In response, Ramaphosa says there should be no pre-conditions in the peace deal that will be negotiated between the two.

Zelenskyy says the country wants a ceasefire without conditions

The two leaders also held discussions on boosting trade and investment opportunities in their respective countries including areas of cooperation on agriculture.
