SA wildlife experts warn against vulture poaching, disease transmission

Date: May 17, 2025

Wildlife experts and those working to conserve the endangered species have warned that the poaching of vultures in South Africa (SA) will lead to increased disease transmission in wildlife and humans

The warning follows the deaths of 116 vultures, after they allegedly ate an elephant carcass laced with poison at the country’s Kruger National Park. Over 80, vultures that survived the poisoning, are being rehabilitated at Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in the Limpopo province. General Manager of Moholoholo Wildlife Rehab Centre, Martial Rappo says the poison was alleged targeted at lions.

“They target lions and poison baits because the lions eat whatever they catch. In some scenes, like a month ago, they have found 76 dead vultures whose heads had been removed,” Rappo said.
