SA Parliament to discuss political interference on police services

Date: Jul 16, 2025

South Africa’s (SA) Chairperson of Parliament's Justice and Constitutional Development committee, Xola Nqola, says it is important for Parliament to be involved in getting to the bottom of allegations of political interference in police.

This, as the committees of Justice and Police are meeting to discuss how Parliament must deal with allegations made by the KwaZulu-Natal Province, Police Commissioner Lieutenant General, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

Among others Mkhwanazi alleged that the, now removed, Police Minister Senzo Mchunu is affiliated to persons linked to criminal activities and that top police officials are involved in criminal activities.

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Thoko Didiza, instructed these two portfolio committee, as well as the Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence to consider, on an urgent basis the allegations.

Nqola says even though other processes have been launched, like criminal charges laid against Mchunu, the Public Protector doing an investigation and a Commission of Inquiry established by President Cyril Ramaphosa, it is important for Parliament to be involved.

“Parliament must act decisively to circumvent situation we are in, may be unintended consequence, we may disregard, people of SA and we may lose confidence in police and the country becomes lawless.”
