‘If our people can’t have access to smart phones, our plans will come to nothing’

Mobile network operator, MTN, says it is selling a smartphone at a significantly reduced price in an effort to give all South Africans (SA) access to information, communication and digital education

Mobile network operators appeared before SA’s Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Communications and Digital Technologies. The companies briefed the committee on universal connectivity as well as reducing the cost of communication. MTN Chief Executive Officer, Charles Molapisi.

“If our people can’t have access to smart phones, our plans will come to nothing. We have launched as MTN, 4G smartphone for R99 ($5) for device that costs R800 ($44) for us, can’t continue to leave people behind,” Molapisi said.
