This follows the launch of an investigation into global satellite internet provider Starlink, which is alleged to be offering services in SA without the required licence.
ICASA Chairperson Mothibi Ramusi confirmed that the authority is working closely with the SA National Space Agency (SANSA) and state security bodies to gather information and determine whether Starlink has breached any laws.
“Ensuring compliance remains a key issue for us,” Ramusi said. “We're actively engaging the relevant institutions to make sure that all services provided within SA’s borders are properly licensed.”
Starlink, operated by the American aerospace company SpaceX, has gained popularity across Africa for delivering high-speed internet to remote areas. However, ICASA has highlighted that all providers must adhere to SA’s legal and regulatory framework, regardless of their origin.
The probe is part of ICASA’s broader efforts to maintain oversight and ensure fair competition within the country’s broadcasting and telecommunications sectors.
