March sees spike in traveller numbers to, from SA

Date: Apr 29, 2025

South Africa (SA) experienced a notable rise in border crossings last month, with nearly three million people travelling into and out of the country.

Statistics SA (Stats SA) reports that foreign nationals made up about 75% of those movements.

Compared to February, the country saw an 8% rise in foreign arrivals, a 14.5% increase in departures, and a 20.4% jump in transit travellers, pointing to a steady rebound in international mobility.

Leisure remains the top reason people are visiting SA, though Stats SA says travel for business, education, and healthcare is also common. Most visitors continue to come from countries within the Southern African Development Community, and road travel remains the most popular way to cross borders.

Tourism trends from previous years show that overseas visitor numbers typically peak during the first and last quarters. However, in both 2021 and 2022, the third and fourth quarters recorded the highest influx of international tourists.
