He was speaking at the opening ceremony of the China International Supply Chain Expo in Beijing, as part of his official working visit to the East Asian nation.
The high-level event, organised by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, focuses on fostering resilient and inclusive global supply chains amid growing geopolitical and economic uncertainty.
Mashatile underscored that the long-standing partnership between SA and China is anchored in a shared vision of development and mutual benefit. He said both countries were committed to expanding and diversifying trade to reinforce stable and inclusive supply chains.
“SA is committed to strengthening its economic ties with China. Our mutual desire to diversify and expand trade gives us the opportunity to build a robust and reliable supply chain between our countries,” Mashatile said.
He noted that the partnership allows SA to broaden its export base while affording China the opportunity to deepen its economic integration with the African continent. He also stressed the importance of aligning bilateral economic co-operation with broader global development goals.
“The outcomes of SA's G20 Presidency must reflect the shared aspirations of the Global South. Our relationship with China is essential to achieving that,” Mashatile added.
SA’s visit comes at a time when Beijing is expanding its Belt and Road Initiative and China-Africa cooperation mechanisms, with increasing attention on infrastructure, energy, and digital connectivity.
Mashatile’s visit is expected to include bilateral meetings with senior Chinese officials, where trade, investment and development finance are likely to top the agenda.
The trip also forms part of SA’s broader efforts to reposition itself within evolving global trade dynamics while reinforcing its role as a gateway to the African continent.
