Union condemns state of SA’s National Lotteries Commission

Date: May 16, 2025

The Public Servants Association (PSA) has voiced serious concern over what it believes is deep-rooted mismanagement and corruption within South Africa’s (SA) National Lotteries Commission (NLC).

The union warns that ongoing issues at the agency are placing both community initiatives and workers’ jobs at risk.

The union says the Commission, tasked with distributing lottery funds to worthy causes, has repeatedly failed in its responsibilities. Instead of supporting impactful projects, large sums have reportedly been funnelled into ventures that ultimately collapsed, a trend the PSA describes as a clear misuse of public money.

PSA Chief Negotiator at the Commission, Zamani Dladla, said the institution is facing a crisis of integrity and governance.

“For a while now, the NLC has struggled to get resources to the people and projects that truly need them,” said Dladla. “What we’re seeing is money going towards initiatives that simply don’t deliver, and that kind of spending can’t be justified. It’s slowed down the funding process and undermined trust in the system.”

Concerns have also been raised about potential conflicts of interest among some of the NLC’s internal committees. According to the PSA, there are indications that certain members of the Commission’s bid evaluation panel maintain close relationships with companies submitting funding proposals.

The PSA is now urging authorities to intervene and clean up the institution before further damage is done. The union insists that the credibility of the Commission, and the future of countless community projects, hangs in the balance.
