Quick intro

Mtha’s journey with 5FM began in April 2024, but her love for radio and storytelling took root long before that. In 2022, while studying at the University of Cape Town, she joined UCT Radio and quickly made waves as the host of the lunchtime show. With a background in drama, debating and public speaking, and a Grade 7 Certificate in Speech and Drama from Trinity College London awarded with Distinction, she has always felt at home behind the mic.

Now based in Johannesburg, Mtha is completing her Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting, building on her Bachelor of Commerce in Financial Accounting from UCT. Whether she’s breaking down financials or breaking into the charts, she is embracing her very own Hannah Montana era, effortlessly blending the world of business with her passion for entertainment.

If you had to sum up yourself in 10 seconds, what would you say?

3 things: sassy, classy and a lil bad assy!

Where were you born and raised?

I am a Joburg girl through and through! Well actually, I was born in the rolling hills of the Eastern Cape in a small town called King Williams Town (eQonce). I moved to Johannesburg when I was 2 years old and it has been home ever since!

In which towns have you lived and where are you living currently?

I currently live in the big JHB! Lived in Cape Town for a few years for university.

Which languages can you speak?

English, Xhosa, Afrikaans (does “om te beklemtoon” count?) and I’d like to think I can speak French – I took it as a subject in high school for 2 years but honestly all I can remember is “fromage”.

Favourite towns or cities visited in SA and abroad:

Now South Africa is gorgeous and has so much to offer – we are so spoilt. Cape Town will always take the cake for me because wow! I’ve also had the privilege of travelling abroad and I am so obsessed with Rome and the little villages of Tuscany!

What are your hobbies?

Brunch with the girls, watching sunsets, doing my 10 step skincare routine, the ritual of making iced matcha lattes and completely basking myself in the joy that is music! There is absolutely no other feeling that compares to the feeling of discovering a beautiful song for the first time.

What is the craziest thing you’ve done?

I’ve hopped in the front seat of a police van and helped the cops catch the man that stole my phone at grove. Long story short: I got my phone back within 20 minutes, thank you very much.

Which pets do you have, if any?

I’ve got a Labrador cross. Her name is Lulu, she’s the sweetest pup!

How to play chess! (My 6 year old brother is teaching me haha!)

A hidden talent that you could probably get paid for:

Interior decorating – I feel like I could eat up an DIY Homemaker Project honestly.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

Teleportation. I’m notoriously & fashionably late for things unfortunately, so it would be fantastic if I could be where I need to be at the click of a finger!

Which sports, if any, do you watch?

I never watch sports on purpose, to be totally honest. But if there’s a watch party or braai with the besties, I’ll definitely be there – especially if they’re watching Formula 1 or SA rugby. Go sports!

Which causes are you really passionate about?

I’m passionate about the socio-economic empowerment of Black South Africans. There’s so much untapped potential in young entrepreneurs who know their communities’ needs but lack access and support. I hope to one day help unlock that potential.

What are the top things on your bucket list?

Solo travel for a month or 2 in a foreign country.

Host a live televised award show – like a Miss South Africa or even the Grammys!

5FM IS THE HOME OF LEGENDS! So many radio icons have sat in this same seat, that makes me feel so honoured! Above all, I LOVEEE engage with the whole nation every weekend – 5Nation has been so kind to us and I love being crazy with them every morning.
