Yanga Mjoli joined 5FM in April 2021. 

She has a degree in Psychology and Communications and started doing news on air at a regional station in Mpumalanga, before joining the 5FM family.

She recently started pursuing stand-up comedy.

QUICKFIRE Q&A:

If you had to sum up yourself in 10 seconds, what would you say?

I just love making people smile and laugh. I’m also very curious about human behaviour, hence my love for psychology. I talk way too much.

Where were you born and raised?

I was born in Johannesburg and raised in Nelspruit / Mbombela.

In which towns have you lived and where are you living currently?

I’ve lived in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Nelspruit. I’m currently living in Johannesburg.

Which languages can you speak?

I can speak Xhosa, Zulu and English.

What are your favourite towns or cities visited in SA and abroad?

Visiting Paris, France to see family in high school was amazing and absolutely one of my top 3 trips.

What are your hobbies?

I love painting, I write a lot - short stories based on my life and random daily occurrences. I love watching movies, reading and listening to music.

What is the craziest thing you’ve done?

I was 16, snuck out the house to go to a party with my friends and told my mom I was going to the mall but that was silly, because at 3 a.m. she called and asked me how the mall was still open. I’m not quite sure what the endgame was but I thought I’d get away with it.

Which pets do you have, if any?

I have an oh so handsome Jack Russell. His name is Lord Spottingham.

5 famous people, living or not, that you would have a kuier with?

Rihanna, because it’s RIHANNA!! Mac Miller, because I absolutely love his music and vibe. Queen Dowager Rosalie Gicanda of Rwanda. Kris Jenner (mentor me!). Blue Ivy -  we’d go to like a waffle place or get frozen yogurt, however I just want to know what it’s like being Beyoncé’s daughter!

Favourite movies and / or series of all time?

Favourite series are definitely Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad and Never Have I Ever.

My favourite movies are The Duchess, Pulp Fiction and Goodfellas.

Describe your home’s interior style?

It’s very functional, but I recently realised I might actually have a pink-themed home.

What is your ideal holiday, described in one line?

I just need the ocean and my friends and family.

Which things would you most want to learn to do?

I NEED to learn how to drive. I want to learn ballet, although it might be too late for me. I want to learn how to play the piano and violin.

A hidden talent that you could probably get paid for:

I could probably get paid painting artwork of people on cruise ships. I say that because I’m good but not great (yet)!

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

Definitely teleportation.

Which sports, if any, do you watch?

I watch soccer, but not as much as I used to.

Which causes are you really passionate about?

Mental health awareness and efforts against gender-based violence.

What are the top things on your bucket list?

I need to visit as many countries in Africa as I can. I’ve always wanted to go to Brazil, specifically to attend the Rio Carnival. Going to Ibiza. Skydiving… and I pray that one day I get to go to Coachella.

Which things in the world (and people) do you dislike?

I am not too fond of rude and inconsiderate people. As far as the world is concerned, I don’t like how unequal the world is, but that’s just life, I guess. It’s unfortunate that not every single person is granted the same opportunities as others.

Which things make the world (and people) awesome?

I love that regardless of all the negativity we can experience as people, we can at least try to find moments of joy, even if it’s only a glimmer.

What’s your favourite thing about your 5FM gig?

I never had a job that I genuinely love, then this happened! I wake up every day with smile on my face looking forward to working with my best friend but also people who have become my friends throughout this 5FM journey.
